The Roma tomatoes are starting to ripen. The first few went in to sandwiches. But now there are enough for making sauce. As is typical the herbs are doing well. It’s nice when you can walk outside and find what you need for a recipe in the garden. Pretty much what we have is thyme,Continue reading “The urban gardener”

The viruses are winning
Good morning world, it’s been a while since I have written anything. That week we went to Madison, Wisconsin for Susan’s 50th class reunion. It was a lot of fun, both with nature and friends. But other things were happening in the world. There’s a new monkeypox (mpox) epidemic in The democratic Republic of CongoContinue reading “The viruses are winning”
Breakfast and water main work
The short street next to our house in Ann Arbor has started being the spot where major water main structures are being stored. It’s a good time to leave town. But not after having breakfast downtown with our friend Mike. We walked down to Avalon and sat at “our” table. Since we are typically theContinue reading “Breakfast and water main work”
Another travel day, another unusual animal
We were traveling from Whitefish Point to Ann Arbor today. Typically, our travel days involve a small number of moths and sometimes butterflies that we see at rest areas along I-75. But today was different. We did have a very small number of moths but Susan finding a Five-lined skink was special. I’m not sureContinue reading “Another travel day, another unusual animal”
The Olympics – sort of.
Passing the baton and racing to the finish. The Presidential Olymics, maybe. Greek myth Olympics! I really like this one. Obviously, I haven’t been watching the Olympics, so I’m sticking to some cartoons. Frankly the first week of the games isn’t very interesting for me. I like the track and field finals especially the decathlon.Continue reading “The Olympics – sort of.”
Another day, another new moth
It’s another beautiful morning at Whitefish Point, Michigan. Since the evening with the Black Witch it’s been rather slow with moths. Nothing big and spectacular, but some interesting smaller moths. The seemingly ever present sweetfern geometer. This is one of the first moths that we get in May and typically have it every week ofContinue reading “Another day, another new moth”
The latest from Whitefish Point
It’s taken a while but the nes waterfowl counter shack has arrived and it’s pretty sweet. Now, who will be the waterfowl counter this fall? That’s yet to be determined. But hopefully it will be somebody who can identify flying ducks, etc. really well. The previous couple of nights have been slow for moths. NothingContinue reading “The latest from Whitefish Point”
A good reason not to be in Ann Arbor
Now that the inner crescents are done, the work has shifted to Hatcher and Saunders Crescent. I’m not sure who the road is closed to since these two streets are the only way to enter our neighborhood. Saunders at Cooley where during the work a water main was broken. But hey, that’s what they’re replacing.Continue reading “A good reason not to be in Ann Arbor”
A very interesting day in the north
I’ve always liked this Cicero quote, especially since we have both a wonderful garden and a an equally wonderful library. However, we both have other needs that we fulfill with our travels. This afternoon we stopped at a rest area on I-75 just south of Grayling, Michigan. It has nice shady picnic tables that offerContinue reading “A very interesting day in the north”
Political cartoons – July, 2024
No comments (until the last one) just political cartoons – Yes! The Olympics are here, and I haven’t watched a single event. More later from where ever I am.
