I have been interested in moths since the 1980s, when I was collecting insects. The majority of my insect collection consists of – dragonflies, butterflies and moths in that order. I no longer collect, but rather started photographing them in the early 2000s. I really became more excited about photographing moths when the most recentContinue reading “The first day of moth season at Whitefish Point”

Birds and Butterflies
When the days get warmer there are opportunities to find butterflies as well as birds. Hairy Woodpeckers have been easy to find recently. Birds were feeding on the ground the other morning. A Palm Warbler on the left and a Veery on the right. Whimbrel flying past the point. Now it was time to headContinue reading “Birds and Butterflies”
Fallout photos from day-2
As is typical of a fallout of birds it doesn’t end with just one day. On the second day I managed to get out with a camera and actually take photos. Nothing quite like a warbler coming to your suet feeder. This is a Yellow-rumped (Myrtle) Warbler. It was nice finding a male Black-throated BlueContinue reading “Fallout photos from day-2”
Broad-winged Hawks
The past few days have been spotty for hawks. There have been a lot of Sharp-shinned Hawks, Bald Eagles and Broad-winged Hawks. Here are a couple of pictures from directly over the cabin. A kettle of 1-200 Broad-winged Hawks just south of the cabin, slowly drifting overhead. The best way to count them is whenContinue reading “Broad-winged Hawks”
Interesting sparrows at Whitefish Point
Yesterday was interesting here at Whitefish Point. At the feeders we had several Eurasian Tree Sparrows, which are annual visitors here. There a friend told us about a Harris’ Sparrow coming to feeders at a friend of his. So off we went. The Harris’ was feeding on the ground with White-crowned Sparrows. All by itselfContinue reading “Interesting sparrows at Whitefish Point”

A birdie day at Whitefish Point
Susan took a picture of me sitting out on the deck watching birds in the morning. The highlight of the day was a Swainson’s Hawk. Here it is next to a Broad-winged Hawk. A couple of different views of the Swainson’s Hawk. The Swainson’s Hawk heading off to the point. One of the many EveningContinue reading “A birdie day at Whitefish Point”
An unexpected find
It’s always nice when you find something that you weren’t expecting. That happened yesterday. Susan found a small critter on the boardwalk to the point. The unexpected surprise was a newt, always a nice find here. I’m sitting writing this as I am taking a break from watching birds heading north. The highlights so farContinue reading “An unexpected find”
From the garden to the birds
The plants in the garden survived the night, it never got that cold. This is what it looked like as we were getting ready to head north. Got to Whitefish Point and the Red-breasted Nuthatches were enjoying the suet. At one point there were seven on the suet or waiting to get to it. ThisContinue reading “From the garden to the birds”
