This is the time of year when insects start to dominate what we are seeing at Whitefish Point. That said, warbler migration is also in full swing – and what do warblers eat? Insects!
Since we live on a sand dune antlion dens/burrows/pits are quite common. Young antlions are underground at eh center of this pit. When an insect walks by they slide down the slope and the larvel antlions catches then pulling them down and eats them. This mornig there were several antlions on the deck below the lights.
Moths are quite numerous, dominated by jackpine budworms. But there are also many interesting caterpillars. More on this in the future.
