The first big day in the garden since planting is starting the garlic harvest. This row will fill that bushel basket soon. Then the garlic is trimmed and put into an old baby gate for drying which will take a couple of weeks. The next row of garlic waiting to leave the ground. Some ofContinue reading “Time to work in the garden”

Finding an interesting orchid
We always stop along M-123, between I-75 and Moran (Mackinac Co., Michigan) to see this orchid when it is blooming. This is the Showy Lady’s-slipper. Sometimes to get there before they are blooming, or after they’re done. But sometime we hit them at peak. That was the case this year with an added benefit. InContinue reading “Finding an interesting orchid”
A couple of interesting moths
At first look these two moths look alike, but they aren’t. The moth on the left is the spear-marked black. The moth on the right is the white-banded black. These were photographed on the same morning coming to our lights. But not only were they there on the same day, there were a lot ofContinue reading “A couple of interesting moths”
Celebrating June
Susan and I celebrated my birthday earlier in June by walking downtown and shopping. We went to Sparrow Market, People’s Food Co-op and the Farmers Market. Farmers Market is always fun. Getting excellent fresh veggies is an important part of our life. But sometimes I am surprised by some of the prices. For instance garlicContinue reading “Celebrating June”
First full day of summer 2024
We spend a lot of the summer at our cabin at Whitefish Point, Michigan. Spring migration is long over, although yesterday we had a small kettle of eleven Broad-winged Hawks overhead. Now we talk long walks looking for flowers and insects, drive to favorite sites for birds and orchids or light for moths (more onContinue reading “First full day of summer 2024″
Summer Solstice 2024
At 4:50 PM EDT on June 20 we officially enter summer this year. I am hoping that this will stimulate me to start blogging more. As many of you know it’s been since late May that I have written anything. Writers funk, writers block, whatever is it I have been in a writing lull. AndContinue reading “Summer Solstice 2024”
Ex-President convicted
Former U.S. President Trump was convicted of all 34 counts against him. This is an historic moment. No former President has been convicted of a crime. Now, the wait begins. With the verdict Trump’s lawyers will be fighting the verdict. What will the judge do with sentencing? This case will undoubtedly dominate the news forContinue reading “Ex-President convicted”
Finally, some flowers!
Last night we had a beautiful sunset. This is one of the great joys of having an upper deck that faces west. White flowers seem to be dominating currently. The plant on the left is wild strawberry, there must be thousands between our place and the lighthouse at Whitefish Point. The plant on the rightContinue reading “Finally, some flowers!”
Time for some political humor
The situation in Palestine is intolerable. The current fascist Israeli government had turned Gaza into the Warsaw ghetto of the 1940s. The truth of the matter is that the anti-Arab situation in Israel started as soon as the state of Israel was formed. Got to love Doonesbury a no-holds barred cartoon. I cannot imagine thatContinue reading “Time for some political humor”
A night filled with moths
When the nights are warmer and without a threat of rain we set up the lights for attracting moths. In this part of May it’s still chancy regarding what we might get at Whitefish Point. The other night was better than we had recently experienced. Here are a few of our moths. We had severalContinue reading “A night filled with moths”
