A few years ago, perhaps 8-10, Susan and took a class in colored-pencil drawing. The class was immense fun. Here’s some of what I did at the time. This mandella shows my inability to draw a circle, but I like it anyway. I had improved drawing circles with this drawing of marbles, which I’ve neverContinue reading “Drawings – 11 (colored-pencil)”

This, that and who knows what else
Needless to say, the past two weeks have been interesting, albeit strange. Measles outbreaks, bird flu, odd governmental changes. Here are a few things that got my attention. It’s obvious that in Washtenaw County, Michigan influenza is raging. I’m glad that we got out flu shots in September. The numbers above might not seem largeContinue reading “This, that and who knows what else”
Drawings-10 (Prehistoric animals)
Two drawings of Smilodon (Saber-toother cat) skulls. Both views show different aspects of the skulls better. But how did the actual animal look? Did Smilodon look like a lion, tiger or jaguar? Perhaps we’ll never know. Arsinotherium, a prehistoric ungulate. Recently we were in the U.P. and there was a statue outside of a businessContinue reading “Drawings-10 (Prehistoric animals)”
Drawings: Part-9
In the past 8-10 days Tufted Titmice have been singing everywhere we have been in Ann Arbor An animal ythat I have always wanted to see, the Sumatran Rhinoceros. Doubt I’ll ever see one in the wild, but maybe someday in a zoo. White Hawk – one of my favorite tropical hawks. I have manyContinue reading “Drawings: Part-9”
Not my President’s Day political cartoons
Thanks to the people protesting the Harris-Biden response to the Middle East we now have a convicted felon as President. Somehow the current President has managed to fill his cabinet with morons, and then there’s the head fascist Musk – sell your Tesla! For those who doubted my comments in 2016 that we’re now 1930sContinue reading “Not my President’s Day political cartoons”
Drawings: Part-8
These sketches represent where we ate and some of the birds that we saw over our past two visits to Chippewa County in the past month. In late January we had a small flock of Pine Grosbeaks. While in most years these are quite common for some reason they’re pretty unusual this year. With anyContinue reading “Drawings: Part-8”

One of the many SNowy Owls that we saw on ur trip. A young Bald Eagle. One of four Glaucous Gulls that we saw at the Dafter Dump. Two ofContinue reading “A few days in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan”
Drawings: Part-7
In 2022 I thought that I wa ready to start drawing again. In some ways I was, in others I wasn’t. Anyway here are some sketches from 2022. This was perhaps one of my favorite drawings from 2022. Both Susan and I really enjoy seeing armadillos in the south-eastern U.S. Drawing of a gargoyle thatContinue reading “Drawings: Part-7”
Drawings: Part-6
We spend a lot of time walking where ever we are – it’s our main form of daily exercise. In the course of our walks I am always looking for whatever there could be of interest. Often in winter one of the first signs of life, other than trees, shrubs and birds is the cocoonContinue reading “Drawings: Part-6”
Some recent books
An interesting book on natural history at night. If you’ve never spent much time out in nature at night I can highly recommend it. I can remember evenings in southern Mexico with owls and howler monkeys fondly. Closer to home we frequently spend evenings outside at Whitefish Point watching owls heading north. More often weContinue reading “Some recent books”
