I have a small traveling watercolor kit that I traveled with in the 1980s and 1990s. Recently I started doing it again, but haven’t done much. This are a few watercolors from the distant past.
Attempting to paint ruby-throated Hummingbirds in nature was a challenge. however there was an perch near where we put up a hummingbird feeder that this male would land on allowing me time to do a quick pencil sketch that I then inked and painted.
The ruins at El Tajin, Mexico. I was sitting on a pyramid and did this quick watercolor sketch. But I wanted to get something with more detail. So I sat at the foot of the pyramid on the left and sketched the one on the right.
I liked the outcome. It’s not great, but it is acceptable. What was rally exciting was having a kettle of Swainson’s Hawks circling in the distance. Somewhere I have a photo that my friend Jody took on me sitting and painting surrounded my a group of young children. Their questions stressed my ability to speak in Spanish but I muddled through.
