Somehow we managed to get out for a nice walk before the storms came yesterday. We always check on the garden before going. That’s when we found a nice insect on the green bean supports.

This is a freshly emerged dog-day cicada. These nice insects are annual, unlike many other cicadas. Now it was time to head off.
On our way home we found another interesting insect. Susan got great photos with her phone. This time it was a cicada-killer which is a large, rather docile wasp. They obviously depend on dog-day cicadas to survive.

Here she is on the ground near her burrow. This critters catch and sting a cicada, paralyzing them. Then she’ll lay eggs on the cicada and bury it in the burrow. When the eggs hatch they’ll have food until next year.

Here she is at the entrance to her burrow.
Now that the storms are over we’re looking forward to a relaxing day. Then again, who knows what we’ll do today.
More later…
Lovely to walk and talk and learn and observe each day!
