Yesterday we went to Fourmile Lake in Washtenaw County in an effort to see or at least hear the King Rails that are there.

The lake was smooth as glass and after about 30-40 minutes we heard the rails. We never saw them, but that was OK. There was plenty of other things to keep us occupied.

An Osprey hunting the lake.

This is a poplar vagabond aphid gall on a cottonwood sapling.

After hearing the rail we headed off to Embury Road hoping for Acadian Flycathers and Cerulean Warblers, both of which we heard.

Smooth brome, a grass was flowering.

There was a lot of spiderwort along the edges of the road, but I was surprised when I found a white one.

Golden alexanders.

Porcupine sedge.

Red-spotted purple and a pearl crescent.

Silver-spotted skipper, perhaps my favorite skipper.

An Eastern forktail was the only Odonate (drafonglies and damselflies) that we saw.
More later…
