Winter into Spring at Whitefish Point

The snow is slowly melting at Whitefish Point. There is some promise in the air, you can smell it. As the snow recedes the first bearberry and trailing arbutus become visible. As ground is exposed the false dune heather and lichens become visible.

The dune restoration site that Susan has worked on for three years. This is adjacent to the lighthouse and is about a third of an acre.

The reindeer lichen is becoming visible – both green and gray.

This morning we went out looking for Spruce Grouse and managed to find one. It seems funny that this year I have seen Spruce and Sharp-tailed Grouse, but not Ruffed Grouse which is more widely distributed and essentially more common. You never know how a year will proceed.

Tomorrow I’m going for the political jugular so be ready.
