Whitefish Point – late August

As I am sitting here writing the morning temperature is 41F, but is quite still, so with a cup of coffee in hand it is quite comfortable. The past few days the wind has been out of the north, sometimes howling, yet bird migration has been rather minimal.

Waves crashing on shore, which surprisingly has added a bunch of sand and rocks to the point.

The recent highlights while not birds have been insects.

Northern wingless grasshoppers making the next generation. When I first found these years ago I was confused by the sexual dimorphism in coloration until finally being able to identifying them.

Late summer and fall is the time to find the greatest diversity in darners. This Variable darner is typical of the genus Aeschna, the darners.

Hunchbacked bee fly, perhaps my favorite fly on a goldenrod.

More later…

      1. Keep moving and stay busy – I try to do both. I monitor butterflies and fungi for the forest preserve. Had dinner with the Zams (Jody and Jerry ) last night. You and Susan look great BTW. Su

  1. Beautiful site, beautiful insects, thanks for sharing. It’s 46 degrees here this morning in upstate NY and I just heard a northern flicker.
