Whitefish Point – January, 2025

It was a slow trip from Ann Arbor to Whitefish Point yesterday. It was 7F when we left Ann Arbor and 5F when we got to our cabin. Along the way we hit intermittent snow squalls especially north of Gaylord. South of the Mackinac Bridge it really started blowing and snowing. That made for some interesting driving.

Yes, this is I-75. But by the time we were at the bridge it had let up a lot.

Now at least we could easily see the cars in front of us, and barely see the bridge towers.

The power had been off for several days prior to Monday, then was back. So we anticipated the cabin being cold. But we hadn’t figured on the furnace not working – which was moderately disturbing. At 4 PM the temperature in the house was 32F, yeah that’s freezing. I got a big fire going and kept it going the rest of the day, also getting up at 2:30 AM to feed it. By bed time the temp in the cabin was a toasty 70 degrees. Out friends Kurt and Jan lend us two space heaters in hopes of thawing the frozen faucets, which they did.

Got up this morning to lots of fresh snow and -2F, but the temp inside was close to 60F.

View south towards Sandy Lane. You couldn’t even tell that we had driven on the driveway.

The view out of the back door, facing north where there is about three feet of snow on the deck.

The view facing west from our bedroom.

The view east from the kitchen, towards Whitefish Bay with snow in the trees blocking any chance of seeing the frozen bay.

Ah, the exciting life of living in the north.

More later…
