As I am sitting here writing the morning temperature is 41F, but is quite still, so with a cup of coffee in hand it is quite comfortable. The past few days the wind has been out of the north, sometimes howling, yet bird migration has been rather minimal. Waves crashing on shore, which surprisingly hasContinue reading “Whitefish Point – late August”

An interesting day at Whitefish Point
Sitting on the deck watching sunrise is a favorite way to pass some time in the morning. It also allows me to think about what has happened or what we might be doing today. In this case I was thinking about yesterday. About a week or ten days ago we found a group of MourningContinue reading “An interesting day at Whitefish Point”
Piping Plovers at Whitefish Point, Michigan
This year there was another successful Piping Plover nest at Whitefish Point. The point itself has been expanding after an early winter storm took out the point in the recent past. I think that this is a molting female plover, she still has some black feathers. This bird was not very far from the hatchingsContinue reading “Piping Plovers at Whitefish Point, Michigan”
Whitefish Point – migrating hawks
The past two days have ha nice numbers of migrating hawks. This was dominated by Sharp-shinned Hawks, Northern Harriers and Rough-legged Hawks, which are all nice to see in numbers. A Sharp-shinned Hawk that landed in a dead tree. Rough-legged Hawks were dominated by light-colored birds although a few dark ones passed by. Northern HarriersContinue reading “Whitefish Point – migrating hawks”
Back at Whitefish Point
We got to our home away from home yesterday afternoon. It’s beautiful, sunny and cool. The high yesterday was 39F. However, there is still a lot of snow. While this view of Whitefish Point Road doesn’t show it well, the base is about 2-3 feet. Here we are at the intersection of Sandy Lane andContinue reading “Back at Whitefish Point”
Some humor to survive the cold
The temperature last night dipped down to -4F – outside. Fortunately the furnace company got to the cabin and solved our problem. Even better was that the guy had the part needed on his truck. Things like that you can never be sure of in the U.P., but it usually works out since they knowContinue reading “Some humor to survive the cold”
Whitefish Point – January, 2025
It was a slow trip from Ann Arbor to Whitefish Point yesterday. It was 7F when we left Ann Arbor and 5F when we got to our cabin. Along the way we hit intermittent snow squalls especially north of Gaylord. South of the Mackinac Bridge it really started blowing and snowing. That made for someContinue reading “Whitefish Point – January, 2025”
Birds and more from 2024
And that’s why I forget to do things. Sometimes cartoons say it better than a human ever could. Now on to nature – An American Kestrel photographed in Washtenaw County, Michigan. American Oystercatcher from Dauphin Island, Alabama. Blue Grosbeak from Washtenaw County, Michigan where they are now nesting. Bohemian Waxwing in CHippewa County, Michigan. BurrowingContinue reading “Birds and more from 2024”
November at Whitefish Point
November is when we start burning wood in our stove. We’ll see how well I did spliting kindling and smaller pieces to get the fires going and how long it will last. So far it’s looking like we might be set for the Winter and Spring. What a difference a year makes. The photo onContinue reading “November at Whitefish Point”
Whitefish Point, November 2024
Walking along the boardwalk towards the point we found where the waterfowl shack had been moved for the winter. While it is only a few hundred yards from where it was and it was a lot of work to move it is in a safe place for the winter. The “point” has grown some 120Continue reading “Whitefish Point, November 2024”
