Summer colds are the worst. Arlo and Janis always seems to be spot on. All of the pickled veggies I made before Alexis, Camilla and Oscar arrived are now gone. I guess it’s time to make more. This morning we headed downtown to hear some free live music. Sonic Lunch is a summer tradition inContinue reading “Sonic Lunch, music and lunch”

A day in a southern bog
Timing is everything when trying to see flowers, insects and birds. Sometimes you get lucky and see what you are looking for at prime time. Sometimes you have to settle you get. Other times you miss what you are looking for. Yesterday we were lucky. Bishop’s Bog is a delightful site in Portage, south ofContinue reading “A day in a southern bog”
Viruses and bombs
Sometimes where we are traveling and Susan is driving I have time to ponder life. For instance, why is the price of gas 80¢ cheaper in Gaylord than in Ann Arbor? The state of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic (Covid-19) seems to be stabilizing. Perhaps the current wave is subsiding. The same can’t be said for monkeypox.Continue reading “Viruses and bombs”
Meme and cartoon Monday
And the poor snake was doing so well. I always wondered about carbon dating. And the whole Harold Bluetooth thing is just odd. Too many guns in this country. Seems right. GUILTY! Defaming the “Wild Things.” Currently, a sad reality. My opinion as well as that of Bill Day. Oh, if only we could findContinue reading “Meme and cartoon Monday”
A slow Sunday at Whitefish Point
Some cartoons to start a lazy day. Not even a cockroach likes Alex Jones. The court, republicans, the Pope and 45 all trying to hide Kansas. Let’s hide them all! Shorebirds are starting to head south already. Yellowlegs are here as are Calidris sandpipers. It’s hard to identify the sandpiper from this view. A NorthernContinue reading “A slow Sunday at Whitefish Point”
A sad anniversary
I posted this image six years ago meaning that today is the 77th anniversary of the first nuclear war. A few days after Hiroshima, Nagasaki was bombed by the United states. Sad event to prove a point. Here’s an explosion of flowers, an orange-fringed orchid. I’d rather think about this beautiful flower than the sinsContinue reading “A sad anniversary”
Live from the U.P.
Sometimes a bumper sticker just speaks to you. That was the case with this one. We spent the morning at the fens and dunes at Vermilion Point. There are always nice plants and insects to find here. Not far from the parking lot there is a small patch of Spotted coralroot. This year we gotContinue reading “Live from the U.P.”
Moths to start the day, then a fen
Started the day with a few moths. Jack pine budworm is obviously a pest of jack pines, which surround us at Whitefish Point. The green-colored wavy-lined emerald is less of a pest, and more uncommon. Here’s a white eulithis on the left and Formosa looper on the right. Both are as common as the emerald.Continue reading “Moths to start the day, then a fen”
What to do when you lose power during a thunderstorm?
The day started with us losing power during high winds after a storm passed through the area. So, not much happening for us today. As a result I started looking at plants and animals that I had photographed on this day in past years. The above photo is a Bog copper. We’ll be headed outContinue reading “What to do when you lose power during a thunderstorm?”
Eating and traveling
The out-doors seating getting set up at Avalon in Downtown Ann Arbor, where we had breakfast the other day. As we were heading north to Whitefish Point, we stopped at a rest area where somebody had fun with an interesting array of stickers. More stickers that were all lined up on a light post. WeContinue reading “Eating and traveling”
