Right now I have a lot of books in the queue so to speak. It’s funny how my reading waxes and wanes as the seasons do. I find that I read a lot more once the weather has turned colder and wetter. So what is being read now and in the near future? Right nowContinue reading “Book reviews and more”

Some drawings I did earlier this year
It’s been awhile since I have done much drawing, here are some from earlier this year. A Tillandsia from Florida. Violets from southern Michigan. Carya cordiformis, bitternut hickory bud, a favorite of mine. Another favorite of mine – magnolia buds. A magnolia flower bud about to open. Spotted wakerobin, a type of trillium that weContinue reading “Some drawings I did earlier this year”
The Deed to the family house in Detroit
On the first page of the deed to may parents home on Lockwood in Detroit I found some interesting information. From 1808: “…the survey of Prairie Ronde from the Detroit River to the Michigan-Chicago Road (which become Michigan Avenue) and the land owned by Joseph Livernois west (the person for whom Livernois Avenue was named).”Continue reading “The Deed to the family house in Detroit”
Editorial cartoons
See, he ended a war. He’s the merchant of fear. And another one bites the dust. Redefining America. Trying to get us back to normal. No reason from MAGA to be there, they wouldn’t help. What does mad-47 know about economics. Yep, they’re all the same. Now, on to the Epstein files. More Epstein filesContinue reading “Editorial cartoons”
End of the Fall Waterfowl count at Whitefish Point
Saturday was the end of the Fall, 2025 waterfowl count at Whitefish Point. The morning started with the point being quite wet and the route to move the shack to a safer spot for the winter was covered wih a foot of water. This would have been a problem if the wind hadn’t changed toContinue reading “End of the Fall Waterfowl count at Whitefish Point”
Escaping to Whitefish Point
A few days ago we headed north to Whitefish Point. For me it was escaping the implications of the government shutdown, and some political situations. It’s difficult to ignore the relationship between the President and Epstein. In the future, hopefully the near future the President will be implicated with Epstein. But for now I willContinue reading “Escaping to Whitefish Point”
Armistice Day, Remembrance Day, Veteran’s Day
In November as we sit and watch the trees lose their leaves and the first snow falls it’s time to remember events on 11 November 1918. The armistice papers marking the end of World War I were signed at 5 in the morning and took effect at 11 am. I learned this poem, by aContinue reading “Armistice Day, Remembrance Day, Veteran’s Day”
United States Marine Corps anniversary
Today is the 250th anniversary of the USMC. The reason that this is important to me is because of my father who was a marine in the South Pacific during World War II. My father in 1945 after coming back from the South Pacific. My fathers journey 1942-1945. My father with a “pack howitzer” inContinue reading “United States Marine Corps anniversary”
A poem by Martin Niemöller
In November, 2016 I was concerned about the fascist takeover of the U.S. presidency. I thought that things were going to get very bad. Well, they did, but in 2020 the fascist regime ended – at least that is what we all thought. In November, 2024 the fascists took over not only the presidency, butContinue reading “A poem by Martin Niemöller”
Ruth versus Ohtani
Over the past couple of years people have been talking about how Shohei Ohtani is the greatest baseball player of all time. Well, frankly he pales when compared to Babe Ruth. Let’s start with looking at their batting statistics through the age of 30. Here are the statistics for Ohtani. He has 280 home runs,Continue reading “Ruth versus Ohtani”
