Snow, Cold and Reading

With the cold front that blew in yesterday morning we got out for a walk to the point then spent the rest of the day inside doing stuff and reading.

The same view on Saturday (left) and Sunday (right). A depressing dusting of snow.

My latest book was Justinian’s Flea. I thought it was going to be more about the Justinian Plague of the 540s C.E., but it was more of a history of the Roman Empire, changes in Europe and the Middle East. It also included a history of rats and fleas as well as the evolution of the bacterium that causes plague. Was it interesting – yes. Was I disappointed – yes. I wanted more on the plague itself. It had tons of annotations and footnotes with historical references. It was essentially a scholarly work on the fall of the Roam Empire and the emergence of European states.

More later, as today “appears” to be warmer than yesterday with a good chance of some migration.

  1. We had below 32 degrees overnight as well, bird singing is quiet this morning with a very fluffed up robin on the clothesline post for a few minutes. Tomorrow when the library re opens, I’ll pick up “Evil Genius” by Claire Oshetsky. She writes stories that are slightly bizarre, with magical realism, like “Chouette” and “Poor Deer.” Hope it warms up everywhere.
