Goodwin Waterfowl Management Area, Florida

We took the long drive to the T.M.Goodwin Waterfowl Management Area in southern Brevard County, Florida. Our target bird was Snail Kite, but we also heard of some other interesting birds there.

When we got there we saw a bunch of people watching and photographing Roseatte Spoonbills. They were nice but not what we were looking for. There was supposed to be a Tropical Kingbird at the entrance.

But I first stopped to photograph this odd couple, A Black and Turkey Vulture side by side.

Then we found the Tropical Kingbird, a new state bird for me in Florida.

A distant pair of Osprey making this years Ospreys.

The non-native Grey-headed Swam-hen (left) outnumbered the native Purple Gallinule (right) 17 to 3. This invasive bird is rapidly replacing the native gallinule.

We had a great look at a Wilson’s Snipe.

Watched is Great Blue Heron eat this snake, which appeared to be a garter snake.

We had a lot of Roseatte Spoonbills, as well as both species of ibises.

But the real treat was finding three Snail Kites.

More tomorrow…
