Merritt Island, Florida – 2026

Yesterday we spent the day with our friend Don visiting Merritt Island. Black Point Wildlife Drive never is a let down for birds and even insects.

All of the expects wading birds were present. There were a lot of Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets, Little Blue Herons and Tricolored Herons. There were tons of White Ibises. And there were fewer Roseate Spoonbills, Wood Storks, Reddish Egrets and Great Blue Herons.

One of several Green Herons that we had.

A huge gathering of ducks and shorebirds. There were mainly Blue-winged Teal and Northern Shovelers along with Willets.

I really like shovelers.

Now on to a few insects –

Great Southern Whites were out in numbers at the few flowering plants available. The Red-marked pachodynerus wasp was an interesting find necturing on Spanish needles.

Gulf fritilleries on a purple thistle.

  1. Oh, those birds are so exotic! I remember seeing roseate spoonbills, ibis and egrets in the Everglades, so many that it was overwhelming! And you have so many ducks! Thanks for sharing.
