Sitting inside after breakfast

I made blueberry pancakes this morning for breakfast. Since it’s currently -11F (-24C) I don’t seeing heading outside soon. But have been thinking about art, drawing and painting. In two weeks we’ll be back in the Upper Peninsula looking for birds with friends. What will we find? Who knows? Regardless, it’ll be interesting and fun. And – it will be warmer than it is right now.

Here are a few drawings of winter birds from last year.

In Michigan we get two different nuthatches. Red-breasted Nuthatch on the left and WHite-breasted Nuthatch on the right. Typically, we get both species all year at Whitefish Point (White-breasted Nuthatch is rare but seen annually), but only one in Ann Arbor (White-breasted Nuthatch). But this year we’re getting both at both places.

This is a male Pine Grosbeak, which is quite common this year in the Upper Peninsula.

This is a Sharp-tailed Grouse, which with a little knowledge can be easy to find in the Upper Peninsula in the fall, winter and spring. Hmm, I gave this sketch friends in Florida.

More later…

  1. Beautiful sketches. In upstate NY I see and hear the WBN all year, but I don’t think RBN too often, though I am not sure since my skills aren’t so good. Stay warm, it’s 3 degrees and sunny right now (calm before the storm).
