Eugene: Day-8

We’ll we’re on our second day at Yachats. The weather has been outrageously beautiful. It’s been in the mid-40s and sunny. Susan and I took a nice walk on the beach in the morning as we’re approaching low-tide, which will be around 1 pm. After breakfast we all went into Yachats to check out the shops.

Downtown Yachats has all of the charm of your typical small coastal city. WE spent a lot of time at Styx, Stones & Bones where Oscar and Camilla each got something.

Then we went to see the river mouth where the water was obviously flowing out to the ocean., unlike the night before when the water was flowing inland.

We stopped at The Mercantile next to the Drift Inn before going back to our place for lunch.

Lunch was sandwiches on the beach.

Then we were off to Ona Beach to hunt for rocks and shells at low tide.

In mid-afternoon we went to Newport to look for sea-lions, but murals were always a nice distraction, at least for me.

I couldn’t resist a picture of Alexis with The Hulk.

We stopped for dinner at a place that over-looked a platform covered with sea-lions. After dinner we all went out to get better looks at these amazing beasts. Then it was time to head back to Yachats for games and two chapters of Another Fine Myth.

More tomorrow….

  1. That’s it, Newport! Don and I traveled through there in Aug/Sept 2001. Now I know where you are. The Pacific coast there is unbelievable. I wanted to go to every lighthouse in our path but ended up visiting only 1 or 2, will have to look into which ones I got to go to. We stayed at a motel on the water, something like Alpine Chalet. And Newport! What a town! We had breakfast at the Whale’s Tale in town and the owner and Don talked and talked. I bought a postcard of the restaurant in the ’70s of the owner and workers right in front, which I had framed and gave to Don. It was the best, now closed. Oh my God, your photos brought that amazing place all back to me. At the motel, we sat outside watching the sunset and chatted with a mother and daughter also staying there who each year met and traveled in the footsteps of Lewis and Clark’s journey! They were fascinating, doing one segment of it per year. And one night we ate at a restaurant right on the coast and could see the resident population of gray whales in their feeding grounds. Unbelievable! What a beautiful place, ENJOY. Loved the pictures of your family! Sandwiches on the beach, amazing!
