We are back at Whitefish Point, Michigan for a bit. It’s always nice when the drive from southern Michigan is easy and the weather is nice. Last night after walking to the point after dinner it had become quite cloudy with a moderate breeze from the west. This meant that any birds flying in the evening should be over the cabin. We spent about 25 minutes looking for migrating owls and were not disappointed.
The first birds that we had were calling and displaying American Woodcocks. Then the owls started flying. As singles and in pairs Long-eared Owls were overhead and between us and Whitefish Bay. The light levels were not good enough for photos so I’m using some from a couple years ago.

Some of the owls that we had were even closer than these.

At one point we had six in quick succession.
By 9:11 pm EDT it was over, at least for us, since it had dipped below 40F and the light levels were quite low.
What a great way to end our first day back at Whitefish Point.
Question: Sitting in my backyard in Ann Arbor I heard what I took to be an owl. Whoot-woo. What would that be? I’m over by the Stone School.

Good morning – sounds like it “might” be a Great Horned Owl.
