Whitefish Point – migrating hawks

The past two days have ha nice numbers of migrating hawks. This was dominated by Sharp-shinned Hawks, Northern Harriers and Rough-legged Hawks, which are all nice to see in numbers.

A Sharp-shinned Hawk that landed in a dead tree.

Rough-legged Hawks were dominated by light-colored birds although a few dark ones passed by.

Northern Harriers were mostly females (brown like the above bird), with a few males. Males are gray and white. Hawk-watchers call them “Gray Ghosts.”

In the afternoon I found a Red-breasted Nuthatch that hit the sider upstairs. It’s really uncommon that birds hit that window. We put the stunned bird into a paper bag in a warm closet and let it recover for an hour. Taking it outside it flew off and is probably at the feeder today.

Here’s the nuthatch not looking all the worse after it’s collision.

More later…
