Traveling in the south – A day at the Atlantic shore

We spent the day traveling on the beach at New Smyrna Beach and at the Canaveral National Seashore. we managed to fins a great variety of plants and animals, including this armadillo.

Not far from the armadillo we found a gopher tortoise.

Brown anoles are much easier to find than green anoles.

Amont the interesting ferns we had golden polypody on the left and shoestring fern on the right.

Among the butterflies that we found was this Great Southern White.

Interesting woody plants included red mangrove (left), green buttonbush (middle) and nickerbean (right).

Laughing Gull (left) and Herring Gull (right) with a Sanderling which is much smaller.

We managed to find two different Great Black-backed Gulls.

Royal Terns (left) outnumbered Sandwich Terns (right) 50:1.

The most common shorebird was Ruddy Turnstone.

More tomorrow…
