Looking at a bad week

Needless to say the world is in shock at the results of the American presidential election. What happens in the future doesn’t look positive, especially when it comes to the future of the supreme court. People are analyzing the race ad nauseum and coming up with numerous reasons for the results. But I think that there are two issues that none of the political pundits are discussing.

First, in the early 1970s the president (Nixon) and both houses attempted to pass an amendment that would eliminate the electoral college. But a block of southern states failed to back this, thus we are stuck with the racist institution.

Second, while everybody is talking about the shift in demographics supporting Trump nobody is talking about the people who didn’t vote. In 2020 81 million people voted for Biden, while 74 million voted for Trump. while other candidates received 2.3 million votes (157 million total votes). In 2024 the winner received 74 million votes, Harris had 71 million votes and others received 2.3 million votes. (147 million total votes). So, it was non-voters that decided the election. Harris’ 10 million fewer votes than Biden received was the difference in the race and equal to the number of people who did not vote for president.

The fire in Camarillo, California (the day after the election) destroyed some 250 homes including my sister-in-laws home which is pictured here which was an extremely sad event.

Susan and I went for a long walk, thinking about life before and after the election.

But remember that the sun rises and when life is tough eat a doughnut.

More later…
