Shorebirds at Whitefish Point

Spending a lot of time on the shore and sand dundes at Whitefish Point means that you will see a lot of shorebirds. The obvious target for the majority of birdwatchers is Piping Plover. But there are a lot of other shorebirds as well.

Adult Piping Plover.

Adult Spotted Sandpiper attempting to distract me from it’s chicks.

The chicks were scurrying between and under the beach heather (Hudsonia tomentosa) which covers most of the dunes. The quick movement and dense cover made photographing the chicks quite difficult.

Additionally, there are Killdeer present whose calls present another distraction.

But watching the behavior of the adult Spotted Sandpiper and seeing where they are looking is important.

But I finally found one of the chick running across a small dune heading towards the adult.

More later…
