When the nights are warmer and without a threat of rain we set up the lights for attracting moths. In this part of May it’s still chancy regarding what we might get at Whitefish Point. The other night was better than we had recently experienced. Here are a few of our moths.

We had several bilobed loopers in the morning.

This is a gray half-spot.

Northern apples sphinx is one of the more common sphinx moths that we get. These have a very long flight season.

I’m not quite sure of what this one is. It might be a shears moth.

The sweetfern geometer is an attractive smallish moth that also occurs throughout the season here at Whitefish Point.

We get several hook-tip moths here. This is a two-line hook-tip.

A voluble dart on the left and wedgling on the right.
Not quite the number that we will be getting by mid-June but for an early season night not all that bad.
More tomorrow…
