Day-21: A great night with moths

Sometimes things just work out better than you could have imagined. This evening was one of those times. We’re staying at an AirB&B in the woods at Crawfordville, Florida. Susan got permission to put up moth sheets and lights. The results were amazing. I wonder what the morning will be like.

Not everything that comes to the sheets are moths. In fact the majority are probably beetles. But grasshoppers re also attracted. This is a hook-faced conehead which is a rather large grasshopper. It was the largest of the 4 or more species of grasshoppers that were at the lights before 10 pm.

This is a green-dusted zale moth (probably). It’s a nice medium-sized moth.

I believe that this is a distinguished cypress owlet moth. I think that the zale and this owlet are both new species for both Susan and me.

We get a lot of tiger moths at our lights at Whitefish Point, Michigan. But this species is not one of them.

Two colorful moths that we get in Michigan. The green marvel on the left, and the rosy-maple moth on the right. Both of these specimens are perfect, as though they just emerged today. And finally, another Michigan friend.

One of no fewer than three luna moths that came to one of the sheets.

While the night is young I already have at least 45 species of moths (38), beetles (4) and grasshoppers (4). What will the morning bring?

More on that later…
