Winter birds-2024

Currently there are a lot of winter finches at Whitefish Point. Red Crossbills are being seen and/or heard daily.

Female Red Crossbill.

Group of female Red Crossbills. These birds have very large birds and not the types that nest locally.

Male Red Crossbill.

Bohemian Waxwing hiding at the dinner table.

Bohemian Waxwings. I love their red under-tail coverts.

With the lack of snow cover a lot of lichens that should be under snow are easily seen.

Female Pine Grosbeak.

Male Pine Grosbeak.

Female Purple Finches under our feeders.

Cruising roads between Pickford and Sault Ste. Marie you have to watch the wires for birds. The left bird is a Northern Shrike (one of six that we had yesterday). The bird on the right is a Snow Bunting.

Bald Eagle on a log near Pickford.

Evening Grosbeaks at a feeder near Pickford.

More tomorrow…
