Ending 2023 and starting 2024 in Eugene, Oregon means fog. The typical day here has fog, maybe some rain, a little sunshine and new adventures.
But to start 2024 I think that I will resort to humor, perhaps some on the darker side, it is after-all winter.

Seeing this and trying to take a sip of coffee was not a good idea. Last century when I ws the city ornithologist and entomologist in Ann Arbor I would often spend time in the field with one of the botanists. She would ask (description only, no photos) if it was possible to see a particular insect, usually a butterfly at a given park. I would reply asking if the host plant was there. If she said yes, then the insect was probably there. Neither one of us used the scientific names of the species we were not responsible for. Then we would often take notes and laugh. Oh I miss those days. But in reality Susan and I do this all of the time.

Watching the New Year arrive on TV meant seeing it at 9 pm PST in Eugene. Staying up until midnight local time almost happened. There was no root beer involved.

As I sit here and write I wonder when I will start seeing the other people in the house.

And then there was the officiating debacle in the Lions game. It was a farce watching what the refs did to decide the outcome of the game. But there might have been a reason –

Nope, all of the appropriate people reported in. So why did it happen?

Ah, so that’s the reason.
More tomorrow…
