Oaxaca, day-4 the drive to Tehuantepec

After leaving Monte Alban he headed east to Tehuantepec. We found a lot of birds on the way. This is a Great Kiskadee

We made a few stops along the way to see special birds. These are Cinnamon-tailed (Sumichrast’s) Sparrow.

One of the highlights was finding Ferruginous Pygmy Owls.

We also had quite a few parakeets. This is a Green Parakeet.

It seemed that there were always new bird species to be seen. The bird on the left is a Golden-fronted woodpecker. The right bird is an Inca Dove.

The Rose-bellied Bunting is a speciality of the area and the Gray Hawk (juvenile) is common throughout Mexico.

And, of course there were always hummingbirds. The left bird is a Turquoise-crowned Hummingbird. The right bird is a Plain-capped Starthroat.

Our first looks at White-throated Magpie-Jays.

Black spiny lizard.

Some of the few dragonflies that we found. The left is a Filigree Skimmer and the right is a Roseate Skimmer.

More large wasps. The left wasp is a Thread-waisted sand-wasp. The right one looks like a Polistes wasp, but I am not sure.

A kite swallowtail butterfly.

Another interesting skipper – North America polygon.

What looked like something buried in the sand from the distance turned into a neat butterfly – Blackened bluewing.

When we got to our motel in Tehuantepec we went to dinner in the dark and found this Black Witch, a moth with a wing span of over six inches. A great way to end the day.

Tomorrow, Tolistoque foothills.
