Searching for a rare bird

Heading out to find a rare bird we saw a ring-necked snake some twenty feet from Don and Loree’s where we’re staying.

This cute little snake was some ten inches long. The we headed off in search of birds.

Our first target was at Jetty Park. And we found it!

The park has some interesting birds and other stuff. Common Ground Doves were the first birds that we encountered after the ever present mockingbirds. And of course there were Fish rows since we were on the shore.

This phoebe was the first of the trip for me in Florida, but that wasn’t what we were looking for.

Then we found it! Bahama Mockingbird.

After we had our fill of the Bahama Mockingbird we headed onto the Jetty in search of sandpipers. The Rocks were covered with a variety of barnacles and small invertebrates that looked like they would be little taste treats for sandpipers.

Brown Pelicans and Ruddy Turnstones seemed to be everywhere.

The we found target bird number two, a Purple Sandpiper. When we had our fill of jetty birds we went in search of target number three in Melbourne, Florida, about 40 minutes away.

Somehow just pulling onto a suburban road and seeing two Western Kingbirds seemed too easy for a target. Bue we enjoyed it none-the-less.

Then it was time to find someplace where we could have our sandwiches and fruit. Susan found Erna Nixon Park which not only had picnic tables but also has hiking trails and a boardwalk.

Highlights were insects and ferns.

Tomorrow might be the right time to talk about the insects that have been showing up at the moth lights.

That might be tomorrow…
