Nan Weston in February

A beautiful Moon before sunrise. Then in the late morning it was time to head off and look for plants and insects

Hepatica, still a month away from budding and blooming. So there’s still a lot of time to get out and see these.

Blue ash, now a fairly rare tree in Michigan.

Skunk cabbage is up at the same time that skunks are becoming more active.

Our first orchid of the year – the over-wintering leaves of Puttyroot. These orchids photosynthesize all winter.

The winter bud of Bitternut hickory.

Evergreen fern and Christmas fern, two of the four ferns that we found. The other two were just the fertile fronds.

Susan relaxing at the Raisin River.

The heron rookery near a trail that we had never walked before. This trail has great potential for finding orchids, ferns and other interesting plants.

What can Susan be looking at along this stream?

She was looking at a pair of mating Common water-striders.

More tomorrow…
