Some insects from 2022 and the last tomatoes from the garden

well, here they are – the last four garden tomatoes of 2022. We picked these is late October when they were still green and let them slowly ripen. We’r4e hoping that one will last until Sunday, making it into 2023. I let you know if that happens. Now on to insects.

A Julia and Zebra longwing that we saw in Florida in February.

February in Florida was also a great time to see and photograph wasps.

Finding Long-tailed skippers is always nice, but finding two mating was even better.

Our first Common Buckeye of the year was also in Florida. Now, on to a few sightings from Michigan.

It was April 2nd when Susan and I went to a known site where The Herald hibernate. I think that we found close to a dozen last spring. They were all inactive and perfect happy to let us get close and photograph them using a flash.

Setting up lights and a sheet we spent a lot of time “mothing” in our backyard. It was interesting seeing people stop by to see what was going on. This is an Ailanthus webworm moth from the yard in May.

In June in eastern Chippewa County we found a pile of Canada Tiger Swallowtails on some animal scat.

This is one of the first Luna moths that we found in St. Ignace, Mackinac County in early June. Believe it or not we had a morning with 4-5 of these big moths at the lights at the cabin.

On a day in late May, early June we had these two beauties – a Columbian moth and Cecropia Moth perched side by side on the electrical outlet at the cabin.

More tomorrow…
