There were a few birds around when we arrived at Whitefish Point yesterday, like this young Broad-winged Hawk.

But the plants were covered with bees and flies. Crab spiders were ambushing insects on many of the plants.

Looking back at the point from the tip we could see what was becoming a beautiful sunset.

But insects like this white-lined sphinx were becoming more active.

Shortly before nine in the evening the moon glowed orange. To the far right we were able to see Saturn and its wings. To the left we saw Jupiter and four of the Jovian moons.

In the morning I headed off to the point to look for the Smith’s Longspur that had been seen there. It was easy to be distracted by the great number of warblers that were along the road. But I was on a mission.

I got to see the longspur, but couldn’t get a photo. This photo was one I took on September 9, 2011, eleven years ago almost to the day of a Smith’s Longspur at the point. I guess it’s when they migrate.
More tomorrow…
