This is what my father was doing in the South Pacific when he turned 21. And below are two Naval Commendation Ribbons that he (and a lot of other marines) received for actions in 1944.

My father was shipped home from with South Pacific after he contracted dengue fever, a mosquito borne disease. But other family members also served in the war,

My Uncle Phil was a member of the Canadian Black Watch. The Black Watch were involved in the landing on the beaches of Dieppe, France. He was then a “guest” of the German Government for the next three years. You should read about Dieppe, another British disaster involving mostly Commonwealth forces.
My Aunt Margaret (Phil’s sister) and her husband Al Reed during World War II when they served in the Canadian military.
