Recent data on the Pandemic

The CDC just published data (17 September 2021) on the effectiveness of each of the covid-vaccines versus unvaccinated people.

With 3,689 people in the study, 45% caught the virus. The effectiveness of each vaccine in decreasing order was: Moderna (88.7%), Pfizer (82.7%) and Johnson & Johnson (67.3%). When eliminating people in long-term facilities these numbers become: Moderna (94%), Pfizer (98%) and Johnson & Johnson (74%). These numbers are very close to what was initially reported from the vaccine-trials last year (2020).

This is important to us as there is currently an outbreak of the virus in Paradise. A local motel, restaurant and the only market in town are all closed due to the virus. We learned about the market when the owner drove past us on Whitefish Point road and stopped to talk. As we went to cross the road she told us to stop since she had Covid, but both she and her husband were on day-five and she felt that they were on the up-side of the disease. Interestingly, many of the people in the Paradise area and nearby Chippewa County had the J&J vaccine, although many are still unvaccinated. Today at the dump and recycling station I was talking to the operator asking how things were going. He was fine but staying away from town (Paradise) with all the Covid there. Hmm, there must be more that we don’t know about. We are both six months past our second dose of Moderna, but are still feeling uncomfortable about having lunch in Paradise yesterday.

Tomorrow, back to nature trails near Paradise, where you can be away from other people.

  1. Thank you for your writings. It’s sad to hear about concerns in Paradise and I hope you and Susan remain safe and well. I’ll be talking with my new, very thorough, doctor about the booster. Best, Laura Van Faasen
