Watching the sun come up it was obvious that it was going to be a nice day. Dragon horn, a lichen that we have in a small patch on one of our sand dunes. I never get enough falcons. Today was dominated by American Kestrels, but there was also a Merlin or two and aContinue reading “Whitefish Point on a sunny Sunday”

Whitefish Point on a cold rainy day – what to do?
Sometimes getting through a day like this, after one that was fairly spectacular can be challenging. So, you have to approach it with some humor. Even this can be difficult. Right now the battery in my computer is not charging, unless it is off all night. That’s going to be a high priority fix whenContinue reading “Whitefish Point on a cold rainy day – what to do?”
The floodgates open with thousands of migrants
Sunrise at Whitefish Point. What a change from yesterday. There were very few clouds, and the winds with barely noticeable. At the feeders there were Common Redpolls (he bird on the right) and our first Purple Finch female of the year. It was obvious that something good was going to come of the day. AContinue reading “The floodgates open with thousands of migrants”
April and the birds are moving between showers
An adukt Sharp-shinned Hawk landed behind the cabin perusing the bird feeders. The hawk then up into another tree which gave us better looks, allowing us to see it face on and in profile. Northward bound
I’ll be at the cabin, perched in the “raptor roost” three-stories up from the sand watching birds. As soon as possible I’ll walk the nearby roads and woods searching for perched Long-eared Owls. Then in the evening we’ll sit in the roost and watch as they take to flight headed to Ontario. Sharp-shinned Hawks willContinue reading “Northward bound”
Comics and “the slap”
It seems odd that two comic strips that I follow seem to have landed on the same theme today, the “famous slap heard ’round the world.” No commentary by me, just the cartoons. More tomorrow…

Dexter-Huron Metropark and spring wildflowers
Burdock (only the old seed head) and catnip were already growing new leaves. Cut-leafed toothwort was putting up flowers. The leaves of great waterleaf are up. The flowers will follow in late May or June. Motherwort leaves were out, but I find the old seed heads more interesting, especially at this time of year. SouthernContinue reading “Dexter-Huron Metropark and spring wildflowers”
Spring means baseball!
But first – three years ago today our feeder in Ann Arbor was covered with ice. So, no complaining about how late spring is this year. As a kid Al Kaline was my idol. The stats on this card are from the previous year when he won the American League batting title. I have aContinue reading “Spring means baseball!”
