We headed over to Portage Michigan in order to look for orange-fringed orchids at Bishop’s Bog. Bishop’s Bog had an excellent board walk and lots of interesting plants. We probably walk a mile along the board walk looking for orchids. Button bush is a common shrub and can attract many insects. The one here isContinue reading “Finding an orchid in the rain”

A sad piece of history
Seventy-seven years ago today the United states turned World War II into the first nuclear war when a nuclear bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. In my youth, perhaps high school I remember reading Hiroshima, the book. I can also remember bombing drills in elementary school when we would all hide under our desks. All-in-all aContinue reading “A sad piece of history”
A couple of neighborhood insects
This little Pennsylvania ambush bug was on Queen-Anne’s-lace. Apparently it was trying to mimic the dark spot in the middle of the flower head. Another insect on Queen-Anne’s-lace was this European paper wasp. It was apparently feeding on pollen. Both insect photos were taken with my phone. I’s pretty amazing what current phones are capableContinue reading “A couple of neighborhood insects”
Ready for September
Yes, we are already getting excited about the Michigan Wolverines football season. Bring it on.
August live music
Back in Ann Arbor just in time for another Sonic Lunch! Today the opening act was Katie Stanley and the main act was Husbands. Sitting in the audience you know that you are in Ann Arbor, home of The University of Michigan. Katie Stanley and partner. Then Husbands took the stage at noon. Another dayContinue reading “August live music”
Back in Ann Arbor
Last night we had Indian food for dinner from Petosky’s only Indian restaurant (unlike Ann Arbor which has a wide array and number of ethnic restaurants). Then we went back to Harbor Springs to see Oppenheimer. Here’s a simple movie review – Go see it! Highly recommended. Watched a lot of YouTube videos over theContinue reading “Back in Ann Arbor”
A busy day in Petosky
Somebody posted this the other day. Well, it was on August 1, 1969 (54 years ago) that I was at Olympia Stadium in Detroit watching Blind Faith perform. What a memory. Front row balcony directly across from the stage. What an evening. Now, to Petosky. A Polish-Cuban restaurant. The concept of Day of the DeadContinue reading “A busy day in Petosky”
Some end of July humor
And that’s what friends are for. Ohh, nature invented something. Better ask the newly “invented” tortoise to get the ball. The relationship between computers, myths and cartoon movies. If it was only doable. I’ll take the closing scenes of Sigourney and the Alien any time. The evolution of new viruses and how they spread. Hey,Continue reading “Some end of July humor”
Moth night, round-2
Last night we set up for another night of moths and other insects at the Natural Areas Preservation site at South Pond. This was a Washtenaw Audubon Society event, and it was well attended. People standing around chatting as we waited for it to get dark. Some of the people listening to Susan and HeidiContinue reading “Moth night, round-2”
Moth night, round-1
This was the add in the on-line version of the Ann Arbor Observer. Well, because of power issues and the threat of rain in Ann Arbor, it was decided to postpone “Moth Night” until Saturday. However, as it was obviously a beautiful evening we decided to do it anyway. That was good because a coupleContinue reading “Moth night, round-1”
