On our way north to Whitefish Point we stopped near Moran in hopes of finding some late blooming Showy ladies-slippers. We were not disappointed. We visited the Owls Roost where the owl banders light for moths at night. “White” moths dominated the roost. But there were a few others. Here’s Susan photographing one of theContinue reading “Another orchid and some moths”

Christopher Moore books
I can’t remember how many years ago I found Lamb. I was intrigued by the subtitle The gospel according to Biff, Christ’s childhood pal. I would be laughing out loud the book was so funny. And that book started me on my “Moore-quest.” It’s funny how some of the books are free-standing, while other shareContinue reading “Christopher Moore books”
An anniversary celebration
Here we were 36 years ago getting married, very appropriately in our garden. It was an outrageously hot day, approaching 100F. We had friends and family in from all over the US and Canada. This year we celebrated with dinner at Sava. It was delightful. Our server even brought us two glasses of champagne toContinue reading “An anniversary celebration”
A busy few days
In the past four days we managed to set aside some time for dinner at El Harissa, a wonderful little North African market and restaurant that’s only a 15 minute walk from home. Now that the garlic has been harvested (more on that later), it’s time to plant pole beans. Some of the herbs haveContinue reading “A busy few days”
A book review
I just finished The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller. This is the second book by Miller that I have read recently. The previous book was Circe. The Song of Achilles was not as good as Circe, but it was still and interesting read. The book covers the life of Achilles from when he wasContinue reading “A book review”
Fourth of July drangonfest
We spent yesterday morning on Embury Road where we had quite a few colorful dragonflies and butterflies. This is an Eastern Pondhawk. Widowed skimmer and Spangled skimmer were both quite common. Whitetails were also common. But I only found two Halloween pennants. Butterflies were abundant, but less colorful than the dragonflies. Delaware skipper on theContinue reading “Fourth of July drangonfest”
Another orchid and some moths
While the day started with what looked like another day of poor air quality, it was actually a foggy morning. When the fog cleared we headed off in search of another interesting orchid. Of course our hike stared off with a snowy urola moth on butterfly weed. As we walked the trail to where theContinue reading “Another orchid and some moths”
July art humor
Some day I’ll have to learn how to use photoshop. A nice take on Dali. But wait there’s more. A funny take on artists rendering a roundworm. And then how to paint mouse-ear chickweed, by selected artists. Air conditioning is very important on hot days. Just some funny weather related humor. That’s what we hopeContinue reading “July art humor”
Garlic harvest 2023
Susan started diging up the garlic this morning. Then I took the first basket and trimmed them getting them ready to dry. Over 200 heads of garlic threaded into an old baby gate. When I was done threading them in I moved the gate into the garage. Wow, it was heavy. Now onto other newsContinue reading “Garlic harvest 2023”
Happy Canada Day to family and friends
I hope that all of my family and friends are safe from fires and smoke on this Canada Day. It’s almost hard to believe that my mother was born in New Brunswick almost 100 years ago. Yesterday we met Mike and Linda at the Northside for breakfast and we took the opportunity to walk overContinue reading “Happy Canada Day to family and friends”
