I’m sitting back at home writing as the temperature is 65F and there are thunderstorms on the horizon, On our trip to the southern states we traveled 3553 miles. So now it’s time to sit back and relax for a few days. Time to get caught up with appointments – doctor appointments and a car appointment.
But for the past month we essentially ate our way through the south. While on many days meals were with our friends we also managed to eat out quite a few times. Here are a few of the places that we visited.

The first place of note was a Mexican restaurant in South Carolina. I had beef enchiladas with beans and rice which was quite good.

In New Smyrna Beach we went to dinner at General Public House where I had a great meal. We all shared fried green tomatoes. Then I had gumbo, which was excellent. Dinner was red fish with garlic mashed potatoes and asparagus which was also quite nice.

Café Verde is always a great choice for a dinner in New Smyrna Beach. Dinner was mahi with couscous, snow peas and asparagus – the perfect Friday meal.

Every year we have at least one meal at JB’s Fish Camp. I had crab-stuffed flounder with fries and coleslaw.

This was the second time that we went to Chicken-Shack with Roger and Dawn. Two piece chicken meal with mashed potatoes and corn was excellent.

The guy who owns Chicken-Shack also runs Uncle Chicken’s. He’s really a character.

Heading west from New Smyrna Beach we stopped at Hacienda San Miguel. I had carnitas here with beans and rice. Another great Mexican meal.

We had an interesting breakfast at Bayou Grill in Bayou al Batre, Alabama. They had an interesting and acceptable breakfast bar at a reasonable price.

Still in Bayou al Batre we had dinner one night with Sue at Phnom Penh, and interesting Asian-fusion restaurant. Their Khemer curry with a spring roll and ginger salad was quite nice.

Bayou Seafood Company is easily missed. Fortunately Sue and David knew about this place. I had fried catfish with fries and coleslaw. Susan had a fried shrimp basket. We were both pleased with the meals.

Breakfast at the Lighthouse bakery on Dauphin Island is always a good choice. It was a nice walk from where we were staying and a short walk on to Shell Mound Preserve.

We spent the night in Gadsden, Alabama on our way home. El Patron was an easy walk from our motel we had their meal for two which was perfect for us. Along with chips, salsa and a margarita the perfect end to a day.

Our final meal out was at Thai House in Lexington, Kentucky. It was a short walk from our motel. I had the Pad Cashew Pork (hot) which was a nice choice, just the right amount of heat with great flavors.
And then we were home.
