We spent the morning yesterday with Tom, Kathi and Sue looking for birds and butterflies in Goethe National Forest near Dunnellon, Florida.

Tom and Kathi, Susan and Sue. Sue is one of the few people that I have known longer than Susan. Tom and Kathi have been my friends for some 40 years. Wow, time sure flies with birders.

Finding Pipevine Swallowtails is always nice. Besides these we had Palamedes, Spicebush, Eastern Tiger and Zebra Swallowtails. The butterflies were really out yesterday.

Palamedes Swallowtail at Cirsium horridulum (“horrible” purple thistle). When these thistles bllom there will always be a lot of butterflies.

Gemmed Satyr, an interesting butterfly.

Northern Cloudywing.

Susan spent a lot of time chasing moths. I settled for this one – Bent-winged Owlet.

Northern Parulas were the most common warblers that we had, which is quite nice.

But the find of the day was probably Red-cockaded Woodpeckers, thanks to Tom’s efforts.
Who knows what today will bring since as I am sitting typing this it’s 41F or a bit higher.
Butterflies and birds, what more could one want? Thank you for the photos and as always for identifying the flora and fauna!
