A book review

I’m trying to spend more time reading and writing this year. So far this year I’ve finished two books and am most of the way through a third. So far I started with fantasy, then a memoir and now science fiction.

The book that I am currently reading a book by Isaac Asimov. This particular book is a collection of short stories. So far, only the first two stories were about robots. Frankly I’d call some of the stories Futuristic fiction, rather than science fiction. Regardless, most are rather good. Interestingly one is about voting and the involvement of a huge, and complex computer that only requires one person in the nation to actually vote. So – should you read it – yes!

I’m not sure where I’ll go after this. Perhaps Anthony Bourdain since it’s sitting on a shelf and I need to get it done. But with reading I’ve become slower than I used to be. Back in the early 2000s I started keeping track of what I was reading since I thought that I wasn’t reading as much as I used to. The reality was that I was actually reading more that in the past. The change was that I was reading a huge number of scientific journals articles. I think that when I kept track I found that I was reading 1500-2000 papers and books which was some 13,000 – 18,000 pages. Then I felt better since if I had read two novels a month that would be some 9-10,000 pages. I also sometimes sit down with a book of poetry. That always takes more time and thought, and usually involves some marginal notes.

The bottom line is take the time to read.

More later…

  1. Agree! Even in high school and after college I noticed I wasnt reading as much as I used to so I kept a watch to be sure I was reading books, like The Brothers Karamazov, instead of just short stories from the New Yorker. Then for decades I didnt read so much for leisure. The last few years I have started borrowing from the local library, this way I can return it right away when I dont like the book. Now I’m trying to get through The pursuit of Liberty, about the Jefferson/Hamilton debate over the future of our government’s structure (very good). Also started Walking it Off by Doug Peacock, about his friendship with Edward Abbey (also good).
