Traveling with watercolors and pens

Whenever I used to travel I always had a camera, but also my watercolor travel kit, pencils and pens. Here are some paintings and drawings from Tecolutla, a coastal town in central Veracruz, Mexico

Hawks soaring overhead.

People hawk-watching at the Pemex station.

A Green-breasted Mango nest near Tecolutla.

Vavious walls and bricks in town.

Peregrine.

View across the Rio Tecolutla, near the Caribbean.

Black-necked Stilt.

People watching migrants looking south across Rio Tecolutla.

White bombax flowers, a favorite tree in Mexico.

A pencil drawing of the ruins of the old ferry building.

A fisherman at the shore of the river. Casting that net is a real art.

A building in town.

Acacia branches.

White Pelicans passing north in the evening. We’d see as many as 50,000 some days.

Up river looking west.

That’s all for today. Next blog will be from Oregon.

  1. Beautiful sketches! So much more personal and detailed and laborious than a picture. Just precious. Not the same experience as traveling in a crowded airport to the west coast. Some people used to travel with their guitar. Thomas Jefferson traveled with his violin and chess set, I heard. And 1995 was another world entirely, where migrants were birds and animals, not humans. You and these drawings are witnesses to that world. Thank you for sharing.
