Monarch migration

Sometimes strange, but interesting things show up in my feeds that I follow on the Internet. Recently one appeared that covered new technologies and monarch migration from the US to both Mexico and Florida.

Project Monarch has fitted a lot of monarchs with transmitters, which in itself is an amazing feat. The map above shows some of the tracking data.

Here are two butterflies that went from Long Point, Ontario, Canada to the Mexican highlands near Mexico City.

Forty-six days from Virginia to the highlands of central Mexico. An amazing trip for a butterfly.

The idea that a butterfly could fly across the Atlantic from Cape May, New Jersey to South Abaco, Bahamas is almost unbelievable, but obviously happening.

Basic science research like this adds so much to our knowledge of the world, insects and migration.
