Brazil: Birds, Food and People

I’m sitting here writing this on Halloween in Ann Arbor, but thinking about the last days in Brazil which was two weeks ago.

Surucua Tanager. on our final day of birding before heading back to the USA.

Sayaca Tanager.

White-winged Becard.

Fawn-breasted Tanager.

Golden-crowned Warbler.

Pinnated Bittern – our last bird of the trip.

Over my days of discussing the wildlife of the Pantanal and Ubatuba I have failed to spend any time talking about the food. Our time in the Pantanal was pretty run of the mill food-wise, The meals in Ubatuba were spectacular.

My typical breakfast was fruit and coffee, sometimes with the addition of some type of bread and sometimes ham or sausage.

Lunches were typically beans and rice with a coke. Dinners often beans and rice with some meats, veggies, breads and plantain.

This was the buffet at one of the lodges. Frankly, if I don’t see a buffet until next spring I’ll be OK.

The open dining area at the last place we stayed in Ubatuba was a delightful spot for our dinners.

We stopped once in Ubatuba for ice cream.

We also stopped once for fish, as I remember this was for lunch.

The fish was excellent. It came with small shrimp, capers, and french fries.

Somehow, going to Brazil without stopping at a Brazilian steak house seemed odd, but we did once for lunch.

No complaints from the crowd. If something was too dry add a sauce or pico de gallo.

One night we went out for pizza.

Kathi and Sue on the left. Kathi and Tom on the right. It’s always nice traveling with good friends.

My friend Mike.

Heck, I’ll sit on the jaguar bench too.

Edson our guide was spectacular. As somebody who has guided in the tropics in the past I can say there are four things that are necessary – good places to stay, good places to eat, knowing where to find birds and knowing bird sounds. Edson was great at all of this.

Avesfoto is his company and I strongly suggest that you use it if you plan on visiting Brazil.

Whatever destination you plan on visiting Edson will make it happen with ease.

Not only is Edson a great guide but he is also a great photographer and speaks excellent English.

More later…

  1. Thank you for posting all your images from your trip. I was happy to read that you saw a Sun Grebe, and can check it off you list. I tried to name the birds before scrolling to read the names. The Sun Grebe was the only one I got correct.

The images of the jaguars were stunning, and the photo of the Jaguar staring at the camera gave me shivers – really.

    Thanks and Happy Halloween!

  2. Just absolutely a fantastic trip to this exotic bird country! I have never seen such a variety of birds with so much color! Gorgeous photos. Thank you SO much for sharing with us, as likely many of us wont be able to visit. Loved the food and lodge commentaries and photos too! No question that Avesfoto is the way to go, thank you for including this info.
