We just got back from Whitefish Point. Where ever we are at this time of year it’s when we end up finding a lot of caterpillars. I’m not saying that we didn’t find a lot during the summer, but there are more now as many species are in their final instar (molts) and are getting ready to form a cocoon. Here are a few from our last few days at Whitefish Point.

This impressive little fur-ball was removed from a sidewalk where it would have easily been stepped on.

I believe that this is an American dagger moth caterpillar. It was also on the sidewalk at the Shipwreck Museum.

This little guy was in our load of wood. No idea of when it is, other that a moth.
An finally something that isn’t a moth.

These are sawfly larvae. Sawflies are in Hymenoptera which includes ants, bees and wasps.
Many caterpillars and similar are quite hard to identify. This is why we end up keeping them in a terrarium and letting them molt into an adult.
Thanks for looking. More later…
