Moth night – Matthaei Botanical Gardens – 2025

We arrived at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens early enough to set up our stations before beople started showing up.

The start of the evening as people starting appearing.

Some of the 68 participants hearing about where the stations were and how we were doing things.

One of our further stations before people were on the trails.

People looking at the insects attracted to the lights.

Some of the moths at the various stations. We’ll probably spend most of today trying to identify moths and other insects.

A really nice hemipteran (true bug) and an Ophion species wasp.

A large neuropteran that got people excited.

A moth and a Lamphyrid beetle (lightening bug).

One of the most interesting moths of the evening.

More later…

  1. Summer is fun for star gazing and moth gazing. Your program inspired me to set up a white sheet and I think a UV light source. I once saw a hummingbird moth on our summer native flowers a few years ago during daylight. Thank you for sharing, Mary Ann Hitt
