Western Canada: Day-2

On 31 May we traveled from Fort Nelson, British Columbia to Watkins Lake, Yukon. The day “looked” like it would be aquick trip, but stops doubled the travel time.

The highlight of the day was Pink Mountain. We drove to a height of over 8,000 feet where we were above the tree line. One of the interesting mammals that we saw was hoary marmot.

Woolly lousewort was perhaps the most interesting plant that we found above the tree line.

Here’s Susan photographing a female Rock Ptarmigan.

Tom photographing a male Rock Ptarmigan which was appropriately on a large rock.

Here’s the same male ptarmigan that I approached closely for a photo.

The road further down Pink Mountain.

One of the Ruffed Grouse that we found.

One of the many Barrow’s Goldeneye that we found.

Boreal Chickadee.

American Three-toed Woodpecker.

A much closer photo of a male American Three-toed Woodpecker.

Harlan’s Hawk, a subspecies of Red-tailed Hawk.

More from our western Canada trip tomorrow…
