No matter how hard I try my days start early. We were staying in Saraland, just north of Mobile less than two hours from our destination on Dauphin Island. We had breakfast at the motel around 6:30 AM and were packed and ready to go by eight. Since we would be way too early to check in it was my task to find a place to go for a walk. This is what I found with very little effort.

On a map Brooks Park in Chickasaw, Alabama looked like a good place to walk and look for plants and birds – well, it was better than good.

There was a tremendous, albeit somewhat rundown series of boardwalks. There were a lot of warblers, mostly Myrtle Warblers, but also some Northern Parulas. And there were interesting plants.

The Cherokee roses were quite fragrant and the maple samaras glowed red in the morning sun.

The most interesting plant was golden club. The flowers were 12-18 inches tall and quite pretty.

Before shopping for food to last our week on Dauphin we stopped for a light lunch of gumbo and key lime pie – when in the south these are two menu items that I always get.

The view of the bridge to Dauphin Island – which drives like a roller-coaster.

Approaching the tallest part of the bridge which allows freighters to easily pass and the view of Duaphin from the top.
