Traveling in the South – Apopka Wildlife Drive

The Apopka Wildlife Drive, which is open only on weekends is one of my favorite places to visit when we are in New Smyrna Beach. The birds are rather tame and close to the roads like this Anhinga.

Another Anhinga having a lunchtime snack.

A Bald Eagle on nest and an Osprey on nest with two large young.

Or how about a solitary Osprey.

Fulvous Whistling-Duck is typically seen here.

Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks are typically common here.

Both Purple Gallinule (left) and Gray-headed Swmphen (right) are common here.

Perhaps the “bird of the day” for me was the Myrtle (Yellow-rumped) Warbler. Not only were they close and easy to photograph, but the were places where we had 50-65 easily in view at once.

Without vocalizing you wouldn’t know that this is a Fish Crow.

And finally, a Wilson’s Snipe in full sun. This was a great way to finish the day with friends.

More later…
