Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan

We spent two beautiful days in Eastern Chippewa County looking for winter birds. We had some luck finding one small group of Common Redpolls, one large flock of Bohemian Waxwings, lots of SNow Buntings and Horned Larks among all of the more common stuff.

Driving the roads around Rudyard always gives us the opportunity of seeing Snowy Owls. The one perched at the top of this pine was our first of seven. We also had several Rough-legged Hawks and Northern Shrikes.

On Friday we spent the night at the Ojibway Hotel. This was a wonderful stop after a full, long day in the field.

Dinner was at Moloney’s Alley where we have a nice meal before calling it a day.

We started very early on Saturday as we were hoping to find the Great Gray Owl that had been reported, but didn’t. We did find six Snowy Owls cruising the roads south of town and at Rudyard. We also had a sighting of our friend Steve Baker who was also looking for owls.

One of the highlights of the day was visiting the Dafter Dump where we had 39 Bald Eagles and an Iceland Gull among the Herring Gulls.

All in all a fun two days of birdwatching.
